The Language of Vision: the work of Gyorgy Kepes, an exhibit
In 2005, the Design Department at the The Art Institute of Boston had the chance to host an exhibit with the purpose of addressing subjects related to basic Design studio courses: exploration of content and concept through form, composition, and visual experimentation in diverse media.
The exhibit was based on the work of the artist Gyorgy Kepes (1906-2001) and of his students at the MIT.
Originally Hungarian, Kepes emigrated to Chicago in 1937 to become one of the first instructors at the New Bauhaus, recruited by László Moholy-Nagy. In Chicago Kepes developed his “Visual Fundamentals” curriculum, integrating Bauhaus ideas with his own. His curriculum is summarized in his book, Language of Vision (1944).
The pieces shown at the exhibit are not only excellent samples of visual awareness and intelligence, but represent the conviction of the artist, that the collaboration between Science, Humanities and Art are the one true path to a harmonious world.
