The use of two colors (cyan and black) in several shades (light and dark values) achieves an effect known as simultaneous contrast, in which some gray tones are perceived as a slightly warm hue (pink, perhaps yellow or a bit orange), "adding" one color to the design palette. The orange cover uses the same resource, with the opposite hues.
